Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed the way humans interact, construct identity, and interpret social reality. Social media presents a continuously flowing stream of information, giving rise to the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), understood as the anxiety of always staying connected and not being left behind in social activities. This study aims to analyze FOMO from the perspective of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy of technology, particularly the concepts of Gestell, techne, and Dasein. The method used is qualitative research with a library research approach through the analysis of philosophical texts and scientific literature related to digital technology and FOMO. The findings indicate that FOMO is not merely a psychological symptom, but also a manifestation of a technological structure that frames reality as instant, measurable, and continuously updated. Social media constructs a space of existence that demands constant connectivity and ongoing social validation. Thus, FOMO is understood as an ontological consequence of how digital technology discloses the world and shapes human “being” within a fast-paced and fluid contemporary digital society.
